„Antifaschismus heute und die Gefahr rechte Politik in Europa“

Internationale antifaschistische Konferenz von FIR und SUBNOR im Oktober 2022

Unter diesem Motto organisiert die FIR am 24. Oktober 2022 eine internationale antifaschistische Konferenz in Belgrad. Die Veranstaltung findet im Rahmen des Jahrestages des Aufstandes in Jugoslawien vor 80 Jahren und zum Gedenken der Befreiung von Belgrad statt.

Gemeinsam mit den Mitgliedsverbänden der FIR und gesellschaftlichen Partnern aus den internationalen antifaschistischen Netzwerken wollen wir eine politische Bestandsaufnahme der Gefahren der extrem rechten Politik in Europa knapp zwei Jahre vor der nächsten Europawahl versuchen. Betrachtet werden sollen die Politik von rechten Parteien an der Macht, wie in Ungarn und Polen, sowie die Wahlergebnisse für extrem rechte und rechtspopulistische Parteien in Frankreich, Spanien und Italien. Diese Resultate sind nicht nur politische Stimmungsbilder, sondern auch dramatische Warnzeichen für den Einfluss auf politische Entscheidungen nicht allein auf nationaler Ebene, sondern für ganz Europa. Wir wollen aber auch Beispiele kennen lernen, die zeigen, diese Tendenz ist aufhaltbar, z.B. die Ergebnisse der Wahlen in Slowenien.

Rechte Politik drückt sich nicht nur in Wahlergebnisse aus, sondern führt auf den unterschiedlichen Ebenen zu einer Verschärfung innenpolitischer und außenpolitischer Spannungen. Insbesondere die Zunahme von nationalistischen Konflikten ist in verschiedenen Teilen Europas Ausdruck zunehmender politischer Instabilität, und das gilt natürlich nicht allein für den Krieg in der Ukraine. 

Wir erwarten Gäste und Delegierte aus allen Mitgliedsverbänden der FIR und aus internationalen Netzwerken, mit denen wir in der antifaschistischen Arbeit verbunden sind. In dieser gemeinsamen Beratung erhoffen wir uns Antworten zu „Antifaschismus heute und die Gefahr der rechten Politik in Europa“.

International antifascist conference of FIR and SUBNOR in October 2022.

Under this slogan, FIR organizes – supported by SUBNOR Servia – an international antifascist conference in Belgrade on October 24, 2022. The event will take place in the framework of the anniversary of the uprising in Yugoslavia 80 years ago and the commemoration of the liberation of Belgrade.
Together with the member federations of FIR and social partners from the international anti-fascist networks, we try a political stocktaking of the dangers of the extreme right politics in Europe scarcely two years before the next European Parliamentary election. We will look at the politics of right-wing parties in power, as in Hungary and Poland, as well as the election results for extreme right wing and right-wing populist parties in France, Spain and Italy. These results are not only political moods, but also dramatic warning signs of the influence of neo-fascism on political decisions not only at the national level, but also for all of Europe. However, we also want to learn about examples that show this tendency can be stopped, e.g. the results of the elections in Slovenia.
Right-wing politics is not only expressed in election results, but also leads to an aggravation of domestic and foreign policy tensions on different levels. In particular, the rise of nationalist conflicts is an expression of increasing political instability in various parts of Europe, and of course, this is not unique to the war in Ukraine.
We expect guests and delegates from all member federations of the FIR and from international networks, with which we are connected in the anti-fascist work. In this common consultation, we hope for answers to « antifascism today and the danger of right-wing politics in Europe ».

FIR presents memorial places documentation to Thuringia Prime Minister Ramelow

At the end of August, the Secretary General of the FIR, Dr. Ulrich Schneider, had an official appointment in the Thuringian State Chancellery for the presentation of the memorial places documentation and an exchange of ideas to the remembrance politics with the Thuringian Prime Minister and current president of the German Bundesrat Bodo Ramelow.

Together with two representatives of the Thuringian VVN-BdA, who have been pursuing an active remembrance policy for many years, including at the various memorial sites, joint proposals for the integration of the memorial sites into civil society remembrance were discussed.

It was from the viewpoint of all participants a constructive dialogue, which showed that the FIR and its member federations are perceived as relevant interlocutors in the memory politics and for today’s questions of the anti-fascist perspective.

Ende August hatte der Generalsekretär der FIR, Dr. Ulrich Schneider, einen offiziellen Termin in der Thüringischen Staatskanzlei zur Präsentation der Gedenkorte-Dokumentation und einem Gedankenaustausch zur Erinnerungspolitik mit Bodo Ramelow, dem Thüringer Ministerpräsidenten und aktuellen Präsidenten des Deutschen Bundesrates.

Gemeinsam mit zwei Vertreterinnen der Thüringischen VVN-BdA, die seit vielen Jahren eine aktive Erinnerungspolitik an den verschiedenen Gedenkorten betreiben, wurden gemeinsame Vorschläge für die Einbindung der Gedenkorte in das zivilgesellschaftliche Gedenken diskutiert.

Es war aus der Sicht aller Beteiligten ein konstruktiver Dialog, der zeigte, dass die FIR und ihre Mitgliedverbände als relevante Gesprächspartner in der Erinnerungspolitik und für heutige Fragen der antifaschistischen Perspektive wahrgenommen werden.

Protest gegen die Zerstörung eines sowjetischen Gedenkortes in Riga, Lettland

Mit Entsetzen und Empörung hat die Internationale Föderation der Widerstandskämpfer (FIR) am Dienstag erfahren müssen, dass die staatlichen Einrichtungen Lettlands tatsächlich mit der Zerstörung des sowjetischen „Denkmals für die Befreier von Sowjet-Lettland und Riga von den deutsch-faschistischen Invasoren“ begonnen haben. Das Monument wurde 1985 zum 40. Jahrestag des Sieges über Hitler-Deutschland errichtet.

Es ist ein barbarischer Akt der Unkultur, gleichbedeutend mit den Bilderstürmereien der Inquisition, wenn die Regierung eines Landes der Europäischen Union – statt sich um die Bewahrung der historischen Erinnerung zu bemühen, die Gedenk- und Erinnerungszeichen für die Befreiung vom Nazifaschismus mutwillig zerstören.

Es ist Ausdruck einer nicht akzeptablen Geschichtsvergessenheit, wenn auf der einen Seite jährlich am lettischen Nationalfeiertag die Kollaborateure der deutschen SS als „Kämpfer für die Freiheit Lettlands“ durch Riga marschieren dürfen, die Befreier von der NS-Barbarei jedoch nicht mehr durch ein Denkmal geehrt werden sollen.

Wir erwarten von der Regierung der Republik Lettlands, dass sie diesen Akt der Barbarei sofort einstellen lässt und das Mahnmal wiederherstellt. Wir erwarten von der Europäischen Union und ihren Repräsentanten, dass sie ihrer Verantwortung für eine antifaschistische europäische Erinnerung gerecht werden und solche Barbarei unterbinden. 

Protest against destruction of soviet memorial in Riga, Latvia

With horror and indignation the International Federation of Resistance Fighters (FIR) had to learn that the state institutions of Latvia have actually begun with the destruction of the Soviet « Monument to the Liberators of Soviet Latvia and Riga from the German-fascist invaders ». The monument was erected in 1985 to mark the 40th anniversary of the victory over Hitler’s Germany.

It is a barbaric act of unculture, equivalent to the iconoclasm of the Inquisition, when the government of a country of the European Union – instead of making efforts to preserve historical memory, wantonly destroys the commemorative and memorial signs of liberation from Nazi fascism.

It is an expression of an unacceptable forgetfulness of history when, on the one hand, the collaborators of the German SS are allowed to march through Riga annually on Latvia’s National Day as « fighters for Latvian freedom », but the liberators from Nazi barbarism are no longer to be honoured by a monument.

We expect the government of the Republic of Latvia to immediately stop this act of barbarism and restore the memorial. We expect from the European Union and its representatives to fulfil their responsibility for an anti-fascist European memory and to stop such barbarism. 

The FIR is dismayed about the attitude of the German foreign minister Baerbock to the reparation question

Those who expected that the new German government would show a more realistic attitude than previous governments on the issue of recognizing Greek reparations claims as compensation for German war crimes and the theft of Greek financial assets during the period of occupation were sorely disappointed during the visit of German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.

It is true that the German foreign minister visited, as Frank-Walter Steinmeier did in 2018, that place of detention near Athens where several thousand Greeks were imprisoned and persecuted, she also laid flowers at the Athens Holocaust memorial. After this she announced in a newspaper interview that it was a « matter of the heart » for her to remember the Nazis’ reign of terror.

However, with such symbolic gestures and pretty words alone she wanted to fob off the Greek victims, their relatives and the Greek government, which of course insists on the reparation payments. She made clear that she and the German government were not even ready for talks in this matter.

The FIR is dismayed about this bigoted appearance of the German foreign minister. It may not be that one completes publicly media-effective « commemorative rituals », however the necessary political consequences refuses. The FIR and its member federation’s support further the political request of the Greek survivor federations for an appropriate compensation and restitution of the looted Greek property.

Die FIR ist bestürzt über die Haltung der deutschen Außenministerin Baerbock zur Reparationsfrage

Wer erwartet hatte, dass die neue deutsche Bundesregierung in der Frage der Anerkennung der griechischen Reparationsforderungen als Kompensation deutscher Kriegsverbrechen und des Raubes griechischer Geldvermögen während der Zeit der Besatzung eine realistischere Haltung als die Vorgängerregierungen an den Tag legen würde, wurde beim Besuch der deutschen Außenministerin Annalena Baerbock schwer enttäuscht.

Zwar besuchte die deutsche Außenministerin wie schon 2018 Frank-Walter Steinmeier jene Haftstätte bei Athen, in der mehrere Tausend Griechen inhaftiert und gefolgter wurden, sie legte auch Blumen am Athener Holocaustdenkmal nieder, anschließend verkündete sie in einem Zeitungsinterview, es sei ihr eine « Herzensangelegenheit », an die Schreckensherrschaft der Nationalsozialisten zu erinnern.

Doch allein mit solch symbolischen Gesten und hübschen Worten wollte sie die griechischen Opfer, ihre Angehörigen und die griechische Regierung, die selbstverständlich auf den Reparationszahlungen besteht, abspeisen. Sie machte klar, dass sie und die deutsche Bundesregierung nicht einmal zu Gesprächen in dieser Angelegenheit bereit seien.

Die FIR ist bestürzt über dieses bigotte Auftreten der deutschen Außenministerin. Es darf nicht sein, dass man öffentlich medienwirksame „Gedenkrituale“ absolviert, jedoch die notwendigen politischen Konsequenzen verweigert. Die FIR und ihre Mitgliedsverbände unterstützen weiterhin das politische Anliegen der griechischen Überlebenden-Verbände auf eine angemessene Kompensation und Restitution des geraubten griechischen Eigentums.

Obituary Carlo Smuraglia

It is with great sadness that we have learnt of the death of Carlo Smuraglia, Honorary President of the International Federation of Reistance Fighters (FIR) and of the Italian Associazione Nazionale Partigiani d’Italia – ANPI.

A Partisan, an Antifascist, former member of the Italian Parliament, a University Professor and a Lawyer who devoted his career to the defence of the Antifascists, the Workers, the Humbles, Carlo Smuraglia will be much missed and will be remembered with the greatest affection and respect.

May 8/9, 1945 remains Liberation Day/ Victory Day

In times of military confrontation, the memory of May 8/9, 1945, the day of liberation from fascism and war in Europe, is more complicated.

The slogan « Liberation from fascism » was clear to everyone in 1945. Today, too, we clearly warn against the influence of neo-fascist forces in many countries of Europe. At the same time, we clearly say that the February 2022 attack on Ukraine was not a step towards « denazification » that could justify Russian actions.

The slogan « Liberation from war » was a reality for all people in Europe in 1945 – even for the German perpetrators, who no longer had to fear air raids. Today, however, many thousands of civilians again live in fear of war and destruction. Moreover, Europe, in view of the military escalation, faces the real danger that the regional proxy war will develop into a new world war in which even the nuclear powers are involved as warring parties.

Therefore, our message on this day must be:

Stop all hostilities immediately! Peace now! Withdrawal of all foreign troops from Ukraine! War is not a solution! Return to diplomacy and negotiations!

However, those who believe that they can suppress the memory of Liberation Day/Victory Day with a view to the war, we contradict in all clarity.

This date marks for FIR and all its member federations also further the victory of the peoples over the inhuman regime of the Hitler fascism,

– which excluded, persecuted and imprisoned political opponents and dissidents,

– which murdered millions of people solely on the basis of a constructed racial affiliation as Jews, as Sinti and Roma, whose extermination has been prepared, as Slavs, whose slavery was foreseen,

– which overran Europe and even countries and peoples in other parts of the world with war, occupation and extermination, with the goal of imperial hegemony and the destruction of the Soviet Union.

On the occasion of this day we remember and commemorate the millions of victims of fascist rule in the concentration and extermination camps and as consequences of fascist expansionism among soldiers and civilians. Especially today, we emphasize that among the approximately 55 million victims of the Second World War were 27 million Soviet citizens.

We thank all the forces of the anti-Hitler coalition, especially the members of the Allied forces, who also militarily smashed this threat. The main burden was borne by the Soviet Army. The Allied forces liberated, with the support and direct intervention of the partisans the different occupied countries and the former German Reich. The Red Army liberated the Auschwitz death camp on January 27. We will never forget that!

We thank the partisans and the resistance in all countries occupied by fascism, where communists were in the first ranks, who risked their lives for the freedom of their homeland. Among them were also German anti-fascists who fought conspiratorially in fascist Germany or from exile in the ranks of the partisans and the Allied forces for the liberation of their own country.

We thank all the men and women who – at the risk of their freedom, health and lives – made this victory possible.

Therefore, we strongly oppose political efforts to revise history by desecrating or even removing memorials to the liberation and the liberators, as we have had to experience in various European countries in recent weeks. Particularly shameful are the multiple desecrations of the memorial in Treptow Park (Berlin), which is dedicated to all soldiers of the Soviet armed forces, whether from Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Russia or Ukraine. Those who desecrate this memorial insult all fighters for liberation. In addition, we contradict just as clearly, all nationalistic approaches to honor collaborators of the fascist occupiers as « freedom fighters ». 

For the FIR and its member federations the legacy of the survivors, which they formulated in the « Oath of Buchenwald » and other declarations after the liberation: « Destruction of Nazism with its roots, creation of a new world of peace and freedom », remains not only a historical document, but also a lasting political obligation for today and tomorrow.

In remembrance of May 8/9, 1945 FIR makes a strong appeal to all European countries because from the current very serious international crisis resuming the negotiations and initiating a new arrangement for a new collective security system, Helsinki 2, to address the environmental and sustainable development challenges for which we are all interdependent.
